Rangers had high hopes for Billy Gilmour, but his imminent exit should make them even more determined to ensure Liam Burt is a success.
General view of Ibrox – Rangers
Rangers appear to have suffered a big blow amid reports teenage wonderkid Billy Gilmour is signing for Chelsea.
Goal report Gilmour will make the move official this June after he turns 16, with Rangers set to receive £500,000 in compensation.
The youngster is rated as Rangers’ brightest talent, already starring for the under-20s, and losing him is a scenario they dreaded.
Yet every situation has it’s winners, and in this regard it is Gilmour’s teammate Liam Burt.
Burt has recently turned 18, and received similar adulation to Gilmour over the past two seasons.
(L-R) Scotland’s Liam Burt, Jack Aitchison, Tony Gallacher, Jamie Barjonas, Zak Rudden and Daniel Baur line up
He made his first team debut as a substitute last season, but has been kept back this campaign with the quality of competition increasing amid Rangers’ promotion to the top flight.
Rangers are at a crossroads thanks to the appointment of Pedro Caixinha, and utilising their academy is essential to their success, thanks to the financial advantage Celtic currently possess.
The Light Blues need their development system to be seen to be successful, and there is no reason to hold him back any more.
Gilmour’s exit will spook the club and want to make them concentrate on ensuring Burt becomes a star and wants to stay.
