Could Leeds United catch Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion at the top of the Championship table?

Leeds United defensive midfielder Liam Bridcutt has told The Yorkshire Evening Post that his side can still finish in the top two of the Championship this season.

The West Yorkshire outfit are fifth in the league table at the moment with 66 points from 37 matches.

The Whites are as many as 11 points behind Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion, who are first and second respectively.

Leeds defensive midfielder Bridcutt, who is 27 years of age, believes that Garry Monk’s side can still catch the top two.

“Yes,” Bridcutt told The Yorkshire Evening Post when asked if he thought that Leeds could still overhaul Brighton.

“Anything can happen in the Championship. It’s just one of those things and as long as we keep putting points on the table then I don’t see why not.”

Top-two finish realistic?

Leeds should be happy with a playoff spot, as that would still give them a good chance of getting promoted to the Premier League at the end of the season.

The Whites will take on Brighton at Elland Road in the Championship this evening, and a win is going to enhance their chances of ending in the top six.

Newcastle and Brighton have the strongest squads in the league, and it is hard to see them drop out of the top two.

Overhauling the Seagulls to the second spot does not look feasible at this moment in time, but perhaps a win this evening and a run of poor results for Brighton could change things in the coming weeks.
