Liam Bridcutt has told Sky Sports’ live post-match coverage of Leeds’ Championship clash with Nottingham Forest (broadcast on 1st January 2018 from 14:30) that he thought that the Whites supporters were brilliant on his first return to Elland Road since his summer move.

Bridcutt spent just under two years with the Yorkshire side and spent much of that time as the side’s captain. However, he fell out of favour during the early weeks of Thomas Christiansen’s tenure and headed to the City Ground – making his debut in the 2-0 defeat to Leeds back in August.

The New Year’s Day game between the two clubs represented Bridcutt’s first return to his old stomping ground, and the midfielder played an important role as Forest held Leeds to a goalless draw. And after the game, the 28-year-old praised the supporters who used to cheer him and expressed his optimism regarding the Whites’ future.

“It was good,” he told Sky Sports when asked about the reception he received from the Leeds fans.

“When I was here, the fans have been brilliant with me, and they’ve been brilliant again today for me. Full credit to Leeds, what they’ve been putting in now for the last two seasons has been fantastic and I wish them all the best.”

Bridcutt may be optimistic about Leeds’ future, but some of the fans may be less than happy after watching Christiansen’s side’s performance – especially as it came just days after a hugely disappointing outing saw the Whites lose 1-0 away at Birmingham.

Leeds created the better chances and Kemar Roofe rattled the crossbar during the second-half against Forest, but it was not the kind of display, on its own, that will be leaving the club’s play-off rivals particularly worried about Christiansen’s side.

But they still sit inside the play-off places, and perhaps these last two performances will have come at the ideal time if they inspire the Leeds hierarchy to use the January transfer window to bolster the side’s options.
