Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has been hailed by LFC TV pundit Neil Mellor following his display against Nottingham Forest.
Liverpool have signed a ‘very brave’ player by luring Alexis Mac Allister away from Brighton and Hove Albion.
That is the verdict of former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor, who has been speaking to the club’s official website.
The Reds coasted to another victory on Sunday, beating Nottingham Forest 3-0 at Anfield.
Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez had Liverpool 2-0 up before Mohamed Salah added a third after the break.
Much of the praise is going to midfielder Dominik Szobsozlai after two assists, but Mac Allister deserves credit too…
Neil Mellor raves about Alexis Mac Allister
Mac Allister formed a midfield trio alongside fellow summer signings Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch.
Liverpool had great control of the game and LFC TV pundit Neil Mellor has now moved to praise Mac Allister.
Mellor feels that Mac Allister was simply ‘magnificent’ against Forest, highlighting that he covered more ground than any other Liverpool player.
Mellor added that Mac Allister is a ‘very brave’ player in the way that he can break up attacks and make line-breaking passes to get Liverpool going forward.
Liverpool paid £35million to sign Mac Allister this past summer and that looks like an absolute bargain right now.
“It was a comfortable victory and pleasing victory, clean sheet and three goals as well, so it has been a great week,” said Mellor. “Having over 700 passes in this game shows just how much control Liverpool had.”
“Alexis clocked the most distance for Liverpool during the game and he is a very clever player but a very brave player as well. You need players like that, can stop a counter-attack and then want to make that pass in between the lines, and his influence out there was clear to see, he was magnificent,” he added.
My view: Mac Allister’s role moving forward will be fascinating
Mac Allister is so talented that we shouldn’t be surprised when he pops up in different positions.
We have seen him as a box-to-box player, as a number 10, even as a wide player for Argentina at the World Cup.
Mac Allister probably wouldn’t say that holding midfield is his best position – even Virgil van Dijk has admitted that.
Right now, Mac Allister is being asked to do a job for the team, allowing the likes of Szoboszlai and Gravenberch to go forward.
Max Allister would no doubt love that freedom moving forward too, but Liverpool still don’t have the ideal holding player.
Wataru Endo is still adjusting to the Premier League and potential signing Andre can only arrive from Fluminense in January.
That means Mac Allister may need to keep playing in a deep role for a while yet, but it will be fascinating to see if that is his long-term role or whether Liverpool eventually use him further forward.
