Leylah Fernandez and Nick Kyrgios have wrapped up their time at the Australian Open after finishing their mixed doubles campaign in Melbourne.

Fernandez and Kyrgios, both of whom have reached Grand Slam finals, lost the 2021 US Open and 2022 Wimbledon finals respectively.

The duo had a strong start to their Australian Open mixed doubles campaign, beating Neal Skupski and Desirae Krawczyk in the first round.

It was a surprise result for many fans in Melbourne as they took down the two-time Wimbledon mixed doubles champions 6-7(6-8), 6-4, 12-10.

The pair were then beaten in the second round of the tournament, losing to James Tracy and Anna Danilina 6-3, 6-1 at John Cain Arena.

Despite the early exit, Fernandez seemed to enjoy the run.

She posted some photos from her time in Melbourne and shared a simple message on Instagram: “This week was fun, thanks Nick Kyrgios.”

While both have come close in singles, they have also had notable runs in doubles. Fernandez finished as runner-up at the 2023 French Open alongside Taylor Townsend.

Kyrgios, on the other hand, has experienced success in doubles, lifting the 2022 Australian Open trophy with his compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Kyrgios and Kokkinakis returned to play together in men’s doubles but went out early, losing to Jason Kubler and Marc Polmans.

The 30-year-old did not play singles in Melbourne this year.

Fernandez played the singles event but was knocked out in the first round by Janice Tjen.

She also teamed up with Timea Babos for women’s doubles, where they lost their opening match to Cristina Bucsa and Nicole Melichar-Martinez.

It was a tough Grand Slam for world No. 23 Fernandez, who will be looking to bounce back quickly.

She had shown promise at the US Open in 2021 before losing to Emma Raducanu, who also struggled in Melbourne this year with just one win.
