Lewis Morgan joined Sunderland on loan from Celtic during the January transfer window.

Sunderland new signing Lewis Morgan in action during the Sky Bet League One match between Sunderland and AFC Wimbledon at Stadium of Light on February 2, 2019 in Sunderland, United Kingdom.

In comments reported by the Sunderland Echo, Lewis Morgan has confirmed that he turned down Championship sides to join Sunderland, insisting that he only wanted to head to the Stadium of Light when he heard that the Black Cats were keen.

Morgan moved to the League One side on loan from Scottish Premiership champions Celtic during the January transfer window. The move saw him link up with former St Mirren boss Jack Ross, who is looking to spearhead Sunderland’s promotion push back to the Championship.

It did not seem to be too much of a surprise when Morgan decided to work under Ross again after a tough spell at Parkhead. And following his debut for the Black Cats at the weekend, he suggested that he had no other plans but to head to Sunderland once he learned of their interest – despite having some tempting offers on the table.

“There was whispers of it [Sunderland interest] throughout the month but nothing really concrete. As soon as the chance came up to come here my mind was made up. I’m working with a coaching staff I’ve got massive respect for, a massive club, it’s something I’m excited about,” he said, as reported by the Sunderland Echo.

“I never thought about it in terms of the league I’m coming to. It was about the club. Great facilities, massive club, that would interest everyone.

“I think it’s well documented that there was interest from the Championship down here and the Premiership up north, but it’s a massive club with great people.”

He may have to make a major impact to send a significant message to Brendan Rodgers while he is away. But Sunderland is a massive club, and handling the pressure of playing for them will do Morgan’s confidence the world of good.

Brendan Rodgers, manager of Celtic waves to fans during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Celtic and St Mirren at Celtic Park on January 23, 2019 in Glasgow, Scotland.

If he can rediscover the form that he showed during his final year at St Mirren, Sunderland will stand a fantastic chance of securing promotion come the end of the campaign.

And if he does make a big impact, then there may well be a number of Celtic fans urging Rodgers to hand the youngster another chance upon his return.
