Glasgow Rangers named a summer signing as the player that he looks up to most at Ibrox.

Lewis Mayo has suggested that Gareth McAuley is the Rangers player that he looks up to most when asked the question by a supporter in a Twitter Q&A.

Mayo is one of a number of exciting prospects currently looking to move through the ranks at Ibrox. He is yet to make his first-team debut for the Gers, but it would not be a huge surprise if it is not too long before that changes.

And he has perhaps provided an insight into which member of the senior side he would look to emulate if he was given a chance by Steven Gerrard after opening up about what it has been like working alongside McAuley since his arrival in the summer.

With McAuley arriving at the end of the summer, the Northern Ireland international spent plenty of time working with the youngsters before recently making his debut for the Gers’ first-team.

Given his experience and the longevity that he has shown during his career, he is arguably one of the best options to learn from. Today is his 39th birthday but he still appears to be building a promising partnership with Connor Goldson and remains an international centre-back.

McAuley is an anomaly in today’s game – he is older than Rangers boss Gerrard – so perhaps it may not be out of the question to suggest that he may end up being the player that Mayo features alongside when the youngster does get that chance in the first-team at Ibrox.
