Mayo confirmed he had agreed a new deal with Rangers on Tuesday.

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is seen during the Scottish Ladbrokes Premiership match between Rangers and Hearts at Ibrox Stadium on October 7, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Lewis Mayo agreed a new contract with Rangers on Tuesday that saw the centre-back agree a contract until the summer of 2021, and Steven Gerrard should prepare his next new deal immediately.

Mayo, 18, has already broken into Scotland’s Under-19 side after starring for Rangers, and even appearing in Billy Kirkwood’s Under-23 side on occasion.

Gerrard has already shown that he is more than willing to promote Rangers’ youngsters into the first team, with Glenn Middleton, Stephen Kelly, Kyle Bradley and more being given a chance.

The Gers boss has got a crop of exciting youngsters on his hands at Rangers, and Mayo is just the start. Gerrard needs to get busy with offering contract to a number of Mayo’s teammates.

His first port of call has to be Serge Atakayi, who has a contract at Ibrox only until the summer of 2020. An 11-time Finland Under-19 international, attacker Atakayi is one of the most highly-rated prospects in Scottish football at the moment.

Able to play up front or out wide, Atakayi boasts plenty of speed and is renowned for his eye for goal which has seen him score for Kirkwood’s reserves on a number of occasions.

Serge Atakayi of Rangers challenges Dougie Nyaupembe of Bury during the Pre-Season Friendly between Rangers and Bury at Ibrox Stadium on July 6, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

He has been on the Rangers bench for three Scottish Premiership matches, all coming in the Pedro Caixinha era, and is showing just why he deserves a chance in the first team. He even featured in the friendly against Bury.

But with 18 months remaining on his current deal, he has to be the next player Rangers offer a new contract to in order to keep one of their brightest stars on side.
