Lewis Hamilton has several interests outside of Formula 1, but that does not include other racing series and events, such as the Indianapolis 500.

When it comes to F1, it has been incredibly rare for IndyCar drivers to come to the sport at all, let alone coming to the grid and doing well. The one notable example is Jacques Villeneuve, who won the F1 title in 1997 two years after winning the IndyCar championship.

Instead, some F1 drivers end up venturing into North America. The likes of Juan Pablo Montoya, Takuma Sato and Marcus Ericsson have gone on to race in IndyCar and have competed in the Indianapolis 500, one of the most iconic races in history.

In 2017, Fernando Alonso tried his hand at the event, abandoning his duties at McLaren and the Monaco Grand Prix to take part. The Spaniard had been leading at one point until an engine failure ruled him out of the race.

No current F1 driver on the grid has attempted the Indy 500 since Alonso’s third attempt in 2020. After his first run in 2017, Hamilton was asked if he would try his hand at the race.

Lewis Hamilton has no interest in racing outside of Formula 1

But speaking to Sky Sports, he revealed that he had ‘zero’ interest in competing in another racing series besides F1.

He said: “There is no other racing series that I have any desire to drive – which is a shame. I wish I had more passion to do an Indy Car or a Le Mans. But there is zero, there is nothing. I have more exciting things outside which I am passionate about.

“I’ve always respected [Indy 500] and appreciated it and I got to watch part of it when Fernando did it, which was super exciting. I love the idea of drivers being able to do more than one series.

“I have a huge amount of respect for those drivers; it’s quite scary when you approach those banks at the speed that they do. Obviously I get lots of opportunities to do those things but I have no plans to go there and do anything serious.”

Hamilton has not stated his intentions to compete in another racing series outside of F1 since then. Now at 41 years old, he is nearing the end of his career.

2026 is make-or-break for him and Ferrari as he hopes to have a fighting chance of winning his eighth world championship. If and when his career ends, what he does next in motorsport, if anything, is unclear.
