Lewis Grabban shares how Sunderland squad reacted to Chris Coleman’s appointment

Sunderland are currently sat at the bottom of the Championship table.

Lewis Grabban has told the Shields Gazette that every Sunderland player was pleased when they heard that Chris Coleman was taking over.

Sunderland took their time to find a replacement for Simon Grayson, but eventually settled upon Coleman.

The appointment of the former Wales boss has gone down well fairly well with the supporters at the Stadium of Light.

And Grabban insists that Sunderland’s players are also optimistic about life under Coleman.

“The club did well [to bring Coleman in]. The players were happy and now we just have to kick on,” he said.

Coleman took charge of his first Sunderland match in midweek, and he was unable to inspire his team to victory.

The Black Cats were beaten 2-1 by Aston Villa, but Grabban, who got on the scoresheet in that contest, insists that there were positives to take from the contest.

The striker added: “The manager has come in and only had one session but there were vast improvements from the last game so we have to take the positives.

“We didn’t get a clear-cut chance I would say. I still thought we built it up well around their box but we had no real clear-cut chance in the first half.

“But hopefully in the next few weeks we’ll be able to do that.”

Coleman will need to spark an improvement in his Sunderland side sooner rather than later, as they currently sit at the bottom of the Championship table.

Sunderland are next in action at the weekend, when they take on fellow strugglers Burton Albion.
