Leeds will now be forced to replace midfielder.

Leeds United midfielder Lewis Baker has been recalled by Chelsea from his loan spell, the Yorkshire Evening Post report.

On the face of it, this is a blow for Leeds as it weakens the squad. But is it really an opportunity instead?

Baker promised much, only to contribute little. He started only two Championship games, being subbed at half-time in both.

Are Leeds really going to miss that, along with his nine unproductive substitute appearances?

There was no sign of improvement and this malaise would likely continue until the start of the season unless Chelsea had taken action.

Leeds now are pushed into the transfer market to sign a replacement. This could be the best thing to happen for them.

A similar circumstance has just played out in Scotland with Rangers.

Liverpool loanee Ovie Ejaria requested a return to Anfield after struggling to make an impact.

Rangers have now gone out and signed Southampton’s Northern Ireland international Steven Davis to take his place, a big upgrade.

Baker was only making up the numbers at Leeds. He wasn’t contributing anything.

Now they will be either pushed into signing a player who is better, or promoting a talented youngster who will probably be able to offer more than the Chelsea loanee did.
