West Ham midfielder Obiang suffered a nasty-looking knee injury against Wigan.
West Ham United head of medical Gary Lewin has told the club’s official website that Pedro Obiang’s knee operation was a success, but delivered some bad news regarding the timescale of the midfielder’s return.
The 25-year-old suffered the injury during the 2-0 FA Cup defeat to League One side Wigan Athletic, being replaced in the 36th minute and has since failed to feature for the Hammers.
The Spaniard underwent surgery to correct the problem, after which he posted on Instagram to assure fans that the operation went well as he begins his recovery in what is another blow to David Moyes’ West Ham injury crisis.
Lewin, who spent 22 years at Arsenal as well as being England’s physio since 1996, told the Hammers’ official website that Obiang is aiming to return in time for pre-season prior to the 2018-19 campaign after surgery in Barcelona.
“Pedro has undergone surgery to repair the medial collateral ligament, and we’re delighted with how it went,” Lewin said. “He went to a specialist in Barcelona for the operation and he is in the best possible hands as the rehab process gets underway.
“Pedro is likely to be out for a little while, but we are confident that he will return fit and strong in ample time for pre-season.”
The former Sampdoria midfielder is just another name in a long list of West Ham casualties which include Manuel Lanzini, Andy Carroll, Marko Arnautovic and Edimilson Fernandez, while Arthur Masuaku remains banned for spitting.
It leaves Moyes with just Mark Noble and Cheikhou Kouyate in the middle of the park after failing to sign a central midfielder in January, while Pablo Zabaleta has played there of late and youngster Josh Cullen can fill in.
