Lewie Coyle’s performance against Barnsley proves he still has a long way to go

The Leeds United defender did not have his greatest match against the Tykes so what is best for him in the short term?

Leeds United youngster Lewie Coyle is, in time, going to be a superb right-back, but the recent defeat to Barnsley proved that he still has some way to go before that is the case.

It is worth noting that Coyle has only recently returned from injury and that his experience remains limited; however, he was given the run-around against the Tykes and once Luke Ayling can return to his position out wide his young teammate will have to settle for a place on the bench at best.

With that in mind, a loan move this month may not be the worst suggestion, even though injuries and suspensions have prompted Leeds boss Garry Monk to call on the 21-year-old for the recent clashes against Derby County and Barnsley.

With Ayling and Gaetano Berardi also fighting for a place at right-back (when everyone is fit and available), Monk’s decision regarding Coyle in the remaining week of the transfer window will be telling.

Either he keeps Coyle at Leeds to cover for any future absences or he acknowledges that the youngster needs to play week in, week out elsewhere to develop his game and ensure performances like the one against Barnsley are ultimately few and far between.
