Tottenham Hotspur continue to impress under Mauricio Pochettino, but two key players could be nearing the Spurs exit door if their contract situations can’t be resolved.
A 3-1 win over Chelsea on Sunday seemingly cemented Tottenham’s place as London’s top club, with the likes of Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli driving Spurs on to victory.
Young players continue to thrive under Pochettino, but two of his more experienced players could be at risk due to the club’s ingrained youth drive.
Defender Toby Alderweireld looks set for a move away this summer, given that Spurs can’t agree a new contract with the Belgian international – and he has been left on the bench in recent games.
The Daily Mail report that Spurs won’t match his demands for a new five-year contract due to the fact that he is already 29, whilst The Telegraph claim that Spurs aren’t keen to hand Mousa Dembele a three-year deal either.
Dembele turns 31 this summer, and it seems clear that Spurs aren’t interested in handing lengthy contracts to players around their 30’s, preferring to focus on youth rather than landing themselves with ageing players for years to come.
Tottenham fans may be enraged by Levy accepting that Alderweireld and Dembele – two key Spurs players – may leave if not handed the deals they want, but it just shows the club’s long-term approach under Pochettino.
Pochettino prefers to work with young players he can develop, and if Spurs can cash in on players around the age of 30, then reinvest the cash in young players such as Matthijs de Ligt or Ryan Sessegnon, then fans may just come to understand Levy’s stance.
