Even by Daniel Levy’s standards, Tottenham Hotspur are planning something ambitious.

He is known as one of football’s fiercest negotiators and has a long track record of masterminding bargains that Spurs benefit from.

Even now, it’s still a tad baffling how the Tottenham chairman managed to pick up £18 million for Kevin Wimmer in 2017, but he did.

But for his next act, Levy might outdo himself……if it were to happen.

The Daily Star has today reported that the North Londoners want £20 million for Erik Lamela.

Lamela is a good player – no doubt about that – but these are very precarious times and the truth is that £20 million is much more now, in this financial climate, than it was in January for example.

And if Levy were to pick up that sum for a player who has missed 97 games through injury in seven years [Transfermarkt], and only scored 16 Premier League goals in 146 games, then it can’t be anything other than a masterstroke.

You could argue that £20 million for Lamela would’ve been a good deal even before the global health crisis struck and started wreaking havoc on clubs’ budgets, but now it would be a truly unbelievable piece of business.
