Could complacency be Tottenham’s biggest threat this month?

Transfer rumours have been quiet surrounding Tottenham Hotspur this month, partly due to the team’s excellent form.

A winning streak has Spurs up to second in the Premier League, closing in on leaders Chelsea.

They have a settled squad, who are growing together, and making a routine habit of demolishing good quality opposition, as evidenced with their 4-0 hammering of West Brom at the weekend.

This leaves chairman Daniel Levy and head coach Mauricio Pochettino with a dilemma – leave everything as it is, or push to sign a new player and try and reach the next level?

In the summer Spurs added Vincent Janssen as back-up for Harry Kane, and although the Dutchman is yet to come good, Tottenham’s relaxed approach in the transfer market so far suggests they are not overly concerned.

Another potential problem is in central defence, with a recent injury to Jan Vertonghen.

Tottenham have options to cover with Kevin Wimmer, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Ben Davies, but this is the time to consider adding an experienced defender, who could really be necessary in case of another injury.

As it stands Tottenham appear happy with their squad, and they should have enough to go on and clinch a top four place.

Yet this should be a time where they look to capitalise on their position, and strengthen the team further. Injuries to Harry Kane or Toby Alderweireld could leave them compromised, and their failure to add players this January could become a source of regret.

The winning streak the team are on is great, but for it to occur through January can be a double edged sword, masking areas which could later need addressing.

Tottenham are well placed to be successful this season and winning the league is a real possibility, but they need to ensure that they fully explore their options this month and do not become complacent.
