Tottenham Hotspur have doubled down on Davinson Sanchez. Manchester United have reason to regret not doing the same.
Manchester United have landed themselves in a predicament over the future of Anthony Martial.
Martial’s contract expires in 2019 and while United can extend it by a further year, it’s far from ideal amid reports from RMC Sport he has rejected a five year contract offer.
In leaving it so late to try and tie Martial’s future down, they have caught the Frenchman at a point in his Old Trafford career where he is not a regular starter, hampering their hopes.
Tottenham have made no such error with Davinson Sanchez.
Having signed Sanchez for a club record £42 million from Ajax last summer, Spurs have been highly impressed with the Colombian’s performances.
So much so that Spurs have doubled down. Yesterday they extended his contract until 2024.
Had they left it another three seasons, who knows, Sanchez could be going through a poor spell, out of the team, and suddenly they become vulnerable to losing him on the cheap… or even for nothing.
Quickly extending Sanchez’s deal now and improving his salary protects Tottenham’s investment and puts them in control of his future.
This was a move United should have made with Anthony Martial in the summer of 2016, the same season he scored a dramatic Wembley winner over Everton in the FA Cup semi-final.
This weekend Martial is not even a lock to make the squad for the final against Chelsea, and if he doesn’t, then United’s hopes of extending his deal will quickly disappear.
