Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, journalist Ian McGarry has claimed that Daniel Levy is set to take a calculated risk on Tottenham’s Harry Kane and his potential sale.
It’s no secret that Spurs may have to sell Kane this summer, but Levy isn’t willing to sanction a sale until after the Euros with the hope that a good performance from Kane at the tournament will see his value skyrocket.
Of course, this is something of a gamble as the inverse scenario is also a possibility, a poor performance from Kane at the Euros would see his value deplete, while a serious injury on international duty would scupper any potential sale.
“Conversations between Tottenham and Kane’s representatives have reached something of a Mexican standoff and the reason for that is that Kane made it quite clear, or at least his representatives did, that the England captain wanted his future to be resolved before the European Championships and for good reason, he wanted to focus on England’s campaign in what is effectively a home tournament,” McGarry said.
“However, Daniel Levy is recalcitrant when it comes to negotiating a fee when it comes to Kane until his valuation of upwards of £130m becomes a reality, but also, Levy is willing to take a punt on the notion that Kane, if he has a very good Euros and scores goals, and maybe even becomes the Golden Boot winner, his value will increase, because that’s how these things work.”
Levy is a smart man, and it’s moves like this that make him one of the brightest business minds in football.
Yes, it’s something of a gamble, but the reward far outweighs the risk, and after winning a World Cup Golden Boot, there’s every chance he repeats the trick at the Euros.
It is a calculated risk in that Kane wants his future sorted before the tournament and messing him about like this could see him kick up even more fuss about getting a move, but it could end up earning Spurs millions.
Kane’s performances for England this summer have just gotten that much more interesting.
