Marcel van der Kraan has claimed that Tottenham winger, Steven Bergwijn, will be in Ajax colours by the time the new season kicks off in August.

The Dutch journalist added that Tottenham are aware of how ‘desperate’ Ajax are to sign the 24-year-old this summer and Daniel Levy knows that a number of players at the Eredivisie champions could be sold this summer.

If that happens, then it would, of course, bulk up Ajax’s bank balance, which would then allow Spurs to get the £30 million they want for the Everton transfer target.

A lot of names could leave the Amsterdam-based club, including Arsenal and Manchester United wanting to sign £43 million-rated, Lisandro Martinez.

Either way, van der Kraan wouldn’t be surprised if this drags on late in the window, but in the end, he expects Bergwijn to be donning Ajax colours, as he told Sky Sports News.

“Well, if you talk about priorities, then I think this is a player they certainly want and that’s Steven Bergwijn,” said van der Kraan.

“The negotiations have been taking long enough, but I think the problem is that Tottenham know how desperate Ajax want him and how important he is for them.

“They are holding out for that £30 million figure and that is what Ajax will need to pay. Probably, Tottenham and Daniel Levy are aware that Ajax’s other players are very much wanted.

“They think ‘well, you will have enough cash very soon to afford Bergwijn’, so this could take a little while, but in the end, I think he will have an Ajax shirt on when the season starts.”

RIGHT TIME FOR BERGWIJN TO LEAVE

From scoring on his debut against Manchester City to that epic comeback against Leicester City last season.

Bergwijn has provided some eye-catching moments in the colours of Tottenham, but he just hasn’t been able to keep his foot on the starting pedal.

A number of Tottenham players have taken their game to the next level under Conte, but it seems as though the Italian hasn’t taken a liking to the Netherlands international who has constantly been used as a back-up.

From that perspective, it’s hard for the player to showcase true form or get any rhythm to his game, but it’s the right time for the player to leave, especially with the 2022 World Cup around the corner.

Bergwijn is still getting into Louis van Gaal’s squad, despite little game time at club level, but he can’t take such a risk with the World Cup starting in November.
