Tottenham Hotspur are likely to make major changes this summer, and right back may be one area that needs some work.

Matt Doherty hasn’t enjoyed a great first season with Spurs, and Japhet Tanganga still doesn’t really have a settled position; his versatility almost counts against him.

Now, RMC Sport claim that Spurs are willing to sell Serge Aurier this summer, and are prepared to let him go in a cut-price deal.

It’s suggested that Spurs will allow Aurier to leave for around €10million (£9million) this summer, which is a huge loss four years after signing him.

Tottenham paid £23million to sign Aurier in 2017, meaning Levy may now be taking a huge £14million loss on the Ivorian.

Additionally, Levy will now have to bring in a replacement for Aurier, as neither Doherty nor Tanganga are primed to step up into that first-choice right back role.

Tottenham sold Kieran Trippier without finding a replacement in the summer of 2019, and they simply cannot afford to do the same thing again.

If Aurier goes, Levy must fund a replacement – and that won’t be cheap. It would certainly cost more than the £9million they would be bringing in for Aurier, that’s for sure.

Fans would love Max Aarons or Tariq Lamptey, but as exciting, young, English players, they would cost upwards of £25million. Maybe Brazilian ace Emerson would be an option, but it would likely be a similar story fee-wise.

Levy forked out a similar price for Aurier in 2017, only to see his value diminish to the point where Spurs aren’t even looking to get eight figures for him as he approaches the final year of his contract.

Now, he needs to do it again. If he doesn’t, Spurs may be left with a mess at right back again, just as they were after failing to replace Trippier.
