Spurs had been favourites to sign Jack Grealish but now Chelsea are reportedly preparing a move for the Aston Villa midfielder.

Tottenham Hotspur have long been the favourites to sign Jack Grealish from Aston Villa, with the Evening Standard reporting the club believe a deal will still be completed before next Monday’s (August 9) deadline.

However, rivals Chelsea may be about to complicate things with the Sun claiming they are getting ready to hijack the move for the midfielder.

An opening offer of £20million from Spurs is what is being mooted, which is something that the Blues are willing to match as they enter the race for Grealish.

Apparently the 22-year-old is tempted by a switch to North London; but then heading to Stamford Bridge is probably also tempting for a player yet to truly prove himself in the Premier League.

Grealish’s former teammate, John Terry, is also likely to back the England Under-21 international going to West London having spent 17 years in the first team there himself.

Terry was said to be a big influence on the midfield ace last season, helping him to rediscover his best form and this subsequent interest from some of the biggest clubs in England.

Levy backlash?

If Tottenham do fail in their quest to sign Grealish, will there be discontent from the fans that chairman Daniel Levy has once again highlighted his tough negotiating skills – but this time to their detriment?

The Mirror recently reported that Levy’s attempts to capitalise on the Villans’ financial problems to drive down his target’s price backfired when the Birmingham side were taken over by billionaires Wes Edens and Nassef Sawaris and having been in pole position to complete the transfer, they could be left watching their rivals swoop in instead.
