Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly concerned that Toby Alderweireld could leave on a free, and they are still open to offers.
Alderweireld has under a year left on his contract at Tottenham, and has not penned new terms.
The Belgian did have a release clause of £25 million written into his contract, but Tottenham have received ‘no serious bids’ all summer.
Alderweireld’s release clause has now expired, but Spurs are still said to be looking to sell the centre-back, who has started the season in Mauricio Pochettino’s plans.
Tottenham fear that Alderweireld is simply going to allow his contract expire, which should let him get a pick of clubs next summer on a free transfer.
Spurs will now listen to offers from abroad for Alderweireld, but there has not be question marks over whether that is a smart decision.
Pochettino clearly rates Alderweireld, and he started in Tottenham’s first game of the season.
To lose him at such a late stage of the summer, when no replacement can be signed, would be a major issue.
Tottenham’s chances of winning silverware are boosted by having Alderweireld around.
And Daniel Levy must ask whether getting a fee, which is unlikely to be over £25 million, is actually worth taking, given the damage that Alderweireld’s departure could do to Tottenham’s season.
