Leeds United have received a massive morale boost ahead of their Premier League opener.
The Whites are set to kick off their Premier League campaign with a difficult trip to Manchester United on Saturday afternoon.
But a brilliant piece of news comes before that visit after Leeds announced that new head coach Marcelo Bielsa had agreed a one-year contract extension on Thursday.
There had been an element of doubt over Bielsa’s long-term future in West Yorkshire, and there still is to some extent by virtue of the fact that he only penned a one-year deal.
But at least it gives Leeds players the peace of mind in knowing that he’s not going anywhere at the moment.
And here’s how United owner Andrea Radrizzani reacted on Twitter, claiming it had only been a matter of paperwork.
Was it ever in doubt?
In a word, no.
Why would Bielsa want to leave Leeds? He is worshipped in West Yorkshire – and for good reason.
Not only did the legendary Argentine mastermind the Whites’ return to the Premier League after a 16-year absence, but has established them as a real force in English football again.
Bielsa’s side finished ninth on their first year back in the Premier League and a win away to champions Manchester City – despite having 10 men – was a big reminder that the veteran can stand toe-to-toe with the best coaches in the country and still come out on top.
It wouldn’t be a big surprise i f Leeds continue to pull up trees under Bielsa, especially now that his future is sorted.
