Speaking on ESPN, Shaka Hislop has been speaking about Spurs’ squad, and he reckons Eric Dier is being played in the wrong position by Nuno Espirito Santo.

Dier has played as a centre-back so far this season, but Hislop believes that the 27-year-old is not a defender, especially not for a side that wants to qualify for the Champions League.

What’s been said?

Hislop was adamant that Dier isn’t a centre-back, while he also had something to say about Dele Alli.

“Eric Dier is not a centre-back, and certainly not a centre-back for a team that has aspirations of getting top four, let’s get that straight. Dele Alli, you want to see Dele Alli do well more than Dele Alli wants to do well himself, he almost deceives you in that way.”

Could solve a problem

We feel that Hislop is being a bit harsh on Dier here. After all, he’s done a stellar job at centre-half during different periods of his career.

However, we have to agree that the 27-year-old may be better utilised as a midfielder in this team.

Just look at Tottenham’s midfield against Arsenal, it was almost non-existent at times, and Dier would solve that.

Yes, the England international isn’t the most technical player, but he’s a good reader of the game and he knows how to play in that holding role.

Nuno needs to add more bite into his midfield and moving Dier into that area could solve the ongoing problem Spurs have in that spot.
