Tim Sherwood has confidently told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (05/12/20 at 1:50 pm) that Arsenal won’t finish in the top four this season.
Mikel Arteta’s side head into the North London derby tonight sitting in the bottom half of the table and one more defeat away from emotions spilling over at the Emirates.
Arsenal fans have been patient with the way they have started the season, but a defeat to their rivals given their current circumstances will certainly make their blood boil.
The aim at the start of the campaign would have been to secure Champions League football and Sherwood thinks there is no chance it will happen via the Premier League route.
“If they lose then I think he [Arteta] comes under pressure,” said Sherwood. “The emotions of the fans losing the North London derby and being so far behind the top four where they want to be at end of the season, which is going to be miraculous.
“They have more chance of winning the Europa League than finishing in the Champions League places.
“Let’s be frank. They are not going to finish in a Champions League spot. He’s trying to salvage his job. A lot of people talk about how they can see the improvements, they can see the club philosophy of how he wants to move it forward. I don’t see it, at the moment.”
A number of weeks ago, Arsenal surprised many by securing all three points at Old Trafford and shutting up their critics.
It seems as though they have to take some inspiration from that game because a win of that kind is needed once again.
Arteta just needs an explosive result in the league, something to well and truly lift his team off and there’s no better place to get that engine started than the North London derby.
