John Terry has plans on becoming a manager but the legendary Chelsea defender has claimed that he’ll never join Tottenham Hotspur.
The 40-year-old joined Dean Smith’s coaching staff at Aston Villa back in 2018 but quit in July to focus on getting a head coach’s role elsewhere.
When asked about Rafael Benitez joining Everton after previously being at Liverpool, a Stadium Astro host compared that switch to Terry potentially joining Tottenham.
But here’s how the iconic Blues centre-back – who won five Premier League titles during a 19-year stint at Stamford Bridge – responded to the idea of going to Spurs.
He said, laughing: “Look that definitely wouldn’t happen – ever! Let me assure you of that. It is a strange decision from Rafa. He was obviously very successful at Liverpool. Knowing Rafa, I’m not surprised to be honest.”
Never say never
Terry clearly would never move to Tottenham in a coaching capacity, due to the Lilywhites’ rivalry with Chelsea down the years.
That being said, Jose Mourinho, during a second stint in West London, said the very same in 2015.
The Portuguese, who was fired by Spurs in April, said: “I will never manage Tottenham. I will not accept the job because I love the Chelsea fans too much.”
Four years later, he did indeed agree to replace Mauricio Pochettino on the white half of the North London divide, but it is, admittedly, a little different for Terry who bleeds blue and always has done, whereas Mourinho is – respectfully – very much a gun for hire more or less.
