Tottenham Hotspur allowed Keanan Bennetts to leave this summer.
Tottenham Hotspur shocked many when they allowed Keanan Bennetts to leave the club this summer, and he has made a perfect start to life with Borussia Monchengladbach.
Spurs have become known for given chances to young players under Mauricio Pochettino, and after the likes of Eric Dier, Harry Winks, Dele Alli and Harry Winks all featured in the first team, many expected Bennetts to make the step up too.
The 19-year-old had been a key player for Tottenham’s development squad, impressing as a left winger throughout last season, with some feeling he could even become left wing back under Pochettino.
However, Bennetts took a surprise decision in May. The teenager became the latest British player to turn his back on English football and head to Germany instead, as Tottenham agreed to sell him to Borussia Monchengladbach.
Bennetts joins the likes of Jadon Sancho and Kaylen Hinds in Germany, whilst Reece Oxford and Ademola Lookman spent time on loan in the Bundesliga last season, and Nottingham Forest’s Matthew Bondswell could head to RB Leizpig.
Bennetts does qualify to play for Germany too, and whilst England will be hoping that he chooses a future with the Three Lions, he has made a dream start to life with Gladbach.
Bennetts scored inside the first three minutes of his Gladbach debut on Friday, as he helped his side beat VfB Lubeck 2-0, getting off to the perfect start with the Foals.
Tottenham may now be tracking Bennetts’ progress in Germany over the years, and whilst a friendly goal won’t make them worry too much, they will hope that letting him go wasn’t a mistake.
