Leeds United dropped points away at Ipswich Town this weekend, although considering the below par performance it could be argued it was one gained.
The impact of failing to win was softened by Norwich City suffering defeat against Burton Albion, keeping the gap between those in the play-offs and teams on the outside to seven points.
Key to Burton’s win was midfield ace Luke Murphy, who was sent out on loan by Leeds United in early January after failing to impress head coach Garry Monk.
Murphy was making his eighth appearance for Burton, and seventh as a starter.
Murphy attempted six tackles in the victory, more than any player on the pitch, and managing eight clearances, more than any other midfield player.
The result ensured Burton currently sit out of the relegation zone, but also kept Murphy’s loan side Leeds safe in the play-off places.
Leeds are in fifth and level with sixth placed Sheffield Wednesday who they host this weekend.
Burton’s opponents Norwich City were the nearest challengers to break into the play-off spots, but now sit seven points adrift rather than four had they won against Murphy’s side.
Murphy is clearly relishing the chance to play regularly, and Leeds’ decision to loan him out is playing unexpected dividends.
