Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Les Ferdinand has told Yahoo Sport’s In On Goal that Dele Alli’s dip in form is down to the pressure he is forced under, but has backed him to rediscover his best.
The 21-year-old seems a mirror of the player that was scoring goals and producing assists for fun last season, managing just three Premier League goals in 17 games for the north Londoners, with his best form coming in the Champions League.
In Europe, he has managed two goals and three assists in just three games, but with the World Cup approaching, fans of all clubs are growing concerned that Alli is not producing the quality he did last season.
But Ferdinand believes Alli’s current performances are just a dip in form, stating that the move to Wembley could have hindered the former MK Dons star’s form.
“What is he, 21?” Ferdinand said. “When I was 32 I had dips in my form. So much has been put on his shoulders because he has such a great year last year. I think the move to Wembley has not helped Tottenham’s plight, for players like Alli, it’s going to stand out even more.
“Now, we saw Harry Kane two years ago, he did that. We’ve asked the question of Alli, and he hasn’t done that. All players have dips in form, I’m sure it’ll come back and hopefully it comes back at the end of the season with the World Cup.”
In all competitions this season, Alli has scored seven goals and produced six assists in 22 appearances and is expected to start on Saturday afternoon as Spurs go up against Burnley at Turf Moor.
Three points against Sean Dyche’s high-flying Burnley will see Spurs leapfrog the Lancashire-based club into sixth, and it could even take them further with Liverpool and Arsenal going head to head on Friday night.
