L’Equipe name Bukayo Saka in World Cup Team of the Tournament

L’Equipe are renowned in the footballing world for their strict player rating system, yet even the French sports daily were impressed with what they saw from Bukayo Saka at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Following the conclusion of the competition this weekend, L’Equipe released their Team of the Tournament as Argentina beat France on penalties to win the World Cup, and despite crashing out with England at the quarter-final stages, Saka was named in the XI.

Lauded by L’Eqiupe for his ‘marvelous’ performances against the likes of Iran and France, Saka is named as the only Premier League player in the entire team as well as the only name who didn’t make it past the quarter-final stages, with the rest of the XI being made of stars from Croatia, Morocco, Les Bleus and Argentina.

Despite playing just four games, Saka made quite a name for himself out in the Middle East with England, with the Arsenal winger scoring three goals in four appearances as the 21-year-old firmly established himself as one of the best young players in Qatar.

Indeed, whilst Jude Bellingham was stealing headlines for similar performances in the midfield, Saka’s goals and overall play was crucial for England in their run to the quarter-finals, and many consider Gareth Southgate’s decision to take the winger off against France as the reason the Three Lions ultimately lost.

Arsenal fans will be excited for 21-year-old’s Premier League return

Saka’s displays in Qatar were something Arsenal fans weren’t too surprised about given how good the winger has been this season. And next week, supporters will be excited to see the attacker return to Premier Lague action when the Gunners face West Ham.

Mikel Arteta’s side lead the English top-flight by five points, and a fully-fit and firing Saka will be key for Arsenal if they’re to maintain their incredible form in the Premier League over the festive period, which could go on to defy the Gunners’ season.
