Carlos Pena faces an uncertain future after his loan spell at Necaxa was cut short. He is due back at Rangers, but cannot feature for the club until January.
It is uncertain whether manager Steven Gerrard plans to reintegrate Pena into the Rangers’ first team squad.
The Rangers attacker has been linked in recent days with a quick switch back to Mexican club Leon, where he has had three separate spells.
Mexican outlet Dale Leon reported he was being lined up as the club’s top January target.
As quickly as the rumours emerged, they have been denied.
Asked about the Rangers owned player, club president Jesus Martinez offered a firm response.
He was quoted by Dale Leon: “No, to the ‘Gullit’ I wish him the best of the successes, he is a great player, he is a great friend personally, but I hope he does well in his career, for now he will not come back.”
Pena struggled to adapt at Rangers and had his fair share of indifferent performances to match the good ones.
He scored five goals in 14 matches from midfield, a creditable return.
If he can get focused and there is a desire from Steven Gerrard to make it work, Pena’s Rangers career doesn’t have to be over.
Leon’s decision not to try and re-sign him removes one of the most obvious exit routes.
