Leon Osman has named the ‘outstanding’ Brighton boss Graham Potter as a possible replacement for Rafa Benitez at Everton, as he told Premier League Productions.
The former Toffees midfielder stated it’s ‘too early’ for someone like Wayne Rooney, who is currently doing wonders at Derby County despite their financial mess.
To the surprise of nobody, Everton sacked Benitez on Sunday afternoon, despite only bringing in the former Liverpool man in the summer.
The Spanish coach replaced Carlo Ancelotti, who decided to leave for Real Madrid when they came knocking for his services.
From the get-go, many warned that handing Benitez the reigns was a big mistake and that has now proven to be the case.
Osman donned the Everton colours for many years, so he knows exactly how the fans felt regarding his appointment.
And he wasn’t surprised when the news broke that Benitez was out of the door, as he also spoke about possible replacements.
“It’s no surprise,” said Osman. “Rafa Benitez, one win in 13 games. He’s a manager that the majority of fans didn’t want.
“Too much history with the red side of Liverpool. Almost destined to end in failure, so I am not surprised today is that day.
On Wayne Rooney: “Not as yet. Wayne is doing very well at Derby County. Is it too early for him?
“There are many others. Graham Potter is doing outstanding in the Premier League. But, with the way that statement read, they already have a new manager lined up.”
Previously, Duncan Ferguson has been the man to fill the void when a manager has been sacked and there have been plenty of those in recent years.
The former hard-hitting striker might be the one to fill the role on a temporary basis again, but there will be some fans pushing for him to get the job full-time.
He understands the club and the fans inside out, so it is logical from that perspective given that many other appointments haven’t worked.
Either way, this Benitez appointment has probably been the worst of the lot and one the Everton fans may never forgive Farhad Moshiri for.
