Everton secured a top-eight finish in Marco Silva’s first season in charge at Goodison Park.
BBC Sport pundit Leon Osman is hoping that Everton can do ‘more than’ just finish in the top-six this season as Marco Silva prepares to enter in his second season in charge of the club.
Last season, the Portuguese coach guided the Merseyside outfit to a top-eight finish as they just about missed out on European football to Wolves.
In recent seasons, Everton have spent big in the transfer market, but they haven’t been able to find the right formula which can result in them taking that next step.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live (08/07/2019 at 09:50 pm), Osman made it clear that progression is needed at Goodison Park and it’ll only come with European football.
“They have to target it [the top six],” Osman told BBC Radio 5 Live. “I say it every season, your targets have to be attainable and to try and achieve stuff you have to go out and thrive for [big things].
“I hope their targets can be even more than that [a top-six finish], but I think progression might be European football. I think top-six would be great. Seventh sometimes gets that position, so you tend to find that as the course of the season goes. But progression is needed.”
In seasons gone by, a Roberto Martinez and Ronald Koeman have tried to take Everton back to their best, with the former only succeeding for a brief period before it all went wrong.
Koeman also showed his worth to the club, but even he became unstuck and the club had no choice but to part ways with him before Silva arrived on the scene last summer.
During his time in England, Silva has managed Hull City, Watford and now Everton, but he has never taken charge of a team in England for as long as he has with his current club.
