The Manchester United captain is being linked with a return to Everton.

Former Everton midfielder Leon Osman has told Sky Sports Fantasy Football Club that Wayne Rooney returning to the club would not surprise him.

The Manchester United captain is in the midst of one of the worst periods of his career at present, with a series of disappointing displays seeing him dropped from the first team by manager Jose Mourinho.

He is no longer a guaranteed starter at Old Trafford, which has led to speculation that he may have to leave the club sooner rather than later.

A return to boyhood club Everton has been touted as a potential solution and Osman admits that he would not be surprised to see that happen.

“It wouldn’t surprise me [if Rooney returned to Everton],” he told Sky Sports Fantasy Football Club.

“I think he’s been mending bridges for a couple of seasons now. He’s an Evertonian at heart. I’m pretty sure he’d love to come back. I hope it happens.”

Whether Everton would be interested in bringing Wayne Rooney back is up for debate, however.

He would not get into the team ahead of Romelu Lukaku as the main striker, while he is arguably not better than Ross Barkley in the number 10 role at present.

There are also the financial aspects to consider. He would have to take a serious wage reduction to move to Merseyside, while the Blues are unlikely to want to pay the big money United would probably ask.

All of those factors make a return to Everton difficult to fathom, with a move to MLS looking increasingly likely should his current situation continue.
