Leon Osman claims Newcastle United’s next manager won’t be ‘excited’ about the job

Newcastle United are on the lookout for a new manager following the departure of Rafa Benitez.

BBC Sport pundit Leon Osman has warned Newcastle United’s next manager that the odds are they will be out of a job in ‘nine months time’.

The former Premier League midfielder also claimed that the next man to take the St James’ Park hot-seat ‘certainly’ won’t be excited about becoming manager of the North East club.

BBC Sport are reporting that Newcastle are considering Sheffield Wednesday boss Steve Bruce to become their next manager, with the four-time promotion winner having vasts amounts of experience in England’s top-flight.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live (08/07/2019 at 9:55 pm), Osman sent a warning to whoever does replace Rafa Benitez because he thinks it won’t end well.

“If you got to Newcastle it’s for the name, it’s for the fanbase, it’s for what the club traditionally was rather than where they are now,” Osman told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“You’re certainly not excited about going to be the Newcastle manager right now because the odds are you are going to be relegated and potentially be out of a job in nine months with your reputation ruined. It’s a huge job and a huge position.

“I don’t see any of them jumping out of their current job and taking the gamble that is Newcastle. It’s not as if they are going to get paid a fortune to do it. They are going to be on a shoestring budget. You are probably looking from the outside and say Newcastle are going to employ someone that is going to be a gamble. It’ll probably be the biggest job they’ve ever had.”

Bruce only took the Sheffield Wednesday post at the turn of the year, a couple of months after he was sacked by Aston Villa, who went onto win promotion with their new manager Dean Smith.

Whoever is appointed, they will have a tough task on their hands because of what is facing them, the mood around the place and the relationship between owner Mike Ashley and the supporters.

But surely given the size of the club and the backing a manager would get from the supporters, any manager of any standing would take the Newcastle job with two hands because the rewards for success can be very satisfying.
