Leon Osman claims Steven Gerrard has to show the board he is taking Rangers in the right direction ahead of Celtic clash

Rangers will travel to Parkhead for a crucial Old Firm fixture against Celtic on Sunday.

Leon Osman has questioned whether Rangers will compete next season and remarkably stated that Steven Gerrard will have to show the board that he is taking the club in the right direction ahead of their game against Celtic.

The former Everton player claimed that the Bhoys have ‘not had a great season’, yet they still find themselves 10 points clear of their rivals at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

On Sunday, Gerrard and his players will travel to Parkhead as they will be looking to make it back-to-back wins against their Old Firm rivals after beating them last time out on home soil.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live (27/03/2019 at 8:25 pm), Osman explained why the match at the weekend is ‘bigger’ for Gerrard and his players as he shared some jaw-dropping thoughts on the former Liverpool man.

“I think it’s a bigger game for Rangers,” Osman told BBC Radio 5 Live. “Celtic have not been great this season, yet they are 10 points ahead. Morelos has been massive for Rangers. He’s going to come under interest you would expect in the summer.

“Are they [Rangers] going to compete next season? They might lose him. Celtic will recruit. I think for Steven Gerrard, for Rangers, for belief, for showing the board that he’s still taking the club in the right direction. I think it’s a really big game for Rangers. They have to make sure they don’t, at least lose the game. Can they put in a performance in to win?”

Whilst the Rangers supporters will be disappointed with how they have performed since the turn of the year, there is no doubt that Gerrard has improved the clubs fortunes from where they were in previous campaigns.

Striker Alfredo Morelos has been the star of the show at Ibrox and some may claim that if he didn’t receive the number of silly sending offs he has been handed out then his club quite possibly could be in a better position.

Rangers have already proven that they can beat their neighbours and while it is highly unlikely that eight-in-a-row will be stopped, they are now in the last chance saloon.

There is still one more Old Firm fixture to take place this season at Ibrox and a win for Gerrard’s side at the weekend might just test their nerves of the Bhoys.
