Everton boss Ronald Koeman has suggested Romelu Lukaku may need to leave Goodison Park.

Leon Osman has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show, which was broadcast on 10th November, that Ronald Koeman’s comments about Everton striker Romelu Lukaku could inspire the striker.

Koeman controversially stated that if Lukaku spent his entire career at Everton he would have failed to reach his potential.

The Dutch boss challenged the striker to earn a move to Barcelona, and the comments have not gone down well at Goodison Park.

Osman admits that he was slightly confused by the statement, but the former Toffees midfielder believes that it could work as a motivational tactic for Lukaku.

“First and foremost, it won’t please the fans to make such a statement,” Osman said.

“I’m just thinking that maybe it will get the best out of him now. To do that [play for Barcelona] he’ll have to play well for Everton in the meantime.

“At this time, you’d think it would be a time to remind people about Everton’s future, rather than what might happen after you leave.”

Lukaku has been linked with a move away from Everton for the last few transfer windows, but the Toffees have fought hard to keep hold of the 23-year-old.

Everton managed to fend off interest from some of Europe’s top clubs last summer to ensure that Lukaku stayed on Merseyside.

Lukaku has already netted seven goals for Everton this season, with his reputation increasing even further.

If Lukaku did leave Everton, Koeman would almost certainly have to sign another striker – as the Toffees’ other options up-front look very limited.
