And yet United won the Steel City derby without having to rely on captain and leading goal-scorer Billy Sharp, who remained on the bench alongside Ched Evans.
Indeed, Chris Wilder now has an incredible wealth of attacking options at his disposal, making it little surprise that his side now appear to be promotion contenders.
United deservedly sit fourth in the Championship and their front men have scarcely got going, with Leon Clarke off the mark for the season after his brace at Wednesday.
David Brooks starred in the game, too, while Clayton Donaldson was a match-winner at Sunderland and James Hanson is yet to impress.
With Sharp, Evans, Clarke, Brooks, Donaldson and Hanson all potential options in attacking positions, Wilder’s men should score a hatful – and that’s before considering the two goals notched by midfielders on Sunday.
A deserved two-goal salvo was certainly well timed for Clarke, who must continue to deliver if he is to retain a place in this exciting attacking team.
