Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami and Heung-min Son’s Los Angeles FC made MLS history on opening night, but it was LAFC who delivered the statement performance in a 3-0 victory.

The season opener drew unprecedented attention, blending global star power with record-breaking attendance.

While the crowd figures made the headlines, the result on the pitch proved just as significant.

Messi vs Son MLS opener sets historic attendance mark

MLS confirmed via its official account that the clash drew 75,673 supporters, marking the largest Opening Day crowd in league history, the second-highest single-game attendance in MLS history, and the highest-attended soccer match globally on the day.

The fixture between Inter Miami and LAFC was positioned as a marquee showdown between two of the league’s most recognisable names.

The atmosphere reflected the league’s continued commercial and global growth. However, beyond the spectacle, LAFC ensured the night belonged to them competitively.

LAFC defeat Inter Miami 3-0 in season opener

On the field, Los Angeles FC secured a commanding 3-0 win over Inter Miami, delivering a disciplined and clinical display in front of the historic crowd.

LAFC controlled key phases of the match and capitalised on their chances, while Miami struggled to convert possession into meaningful attacking output. The defensive structure from the home side limited Messi’s influence for long stretches of the contest.

The result gives LAFC early momentum in the Western Conference standings and sends a clear message about their ambitions this season.

For Inter Miami, the defeat does not erase the significance of the occasion, but it underlines the competitive challenges that remain despite the club’s global appeal.
