Dion Dublin has told Football Focus that Celtic’s ‘abysmal’ start to the season isn’t ‘all down’ to their own ‘deterioration’ but also Rangers’ strong start to the campaign.
The former England striker thinks Rangers have become ‘so much better’ this term and also believes that Neil Lennon will leave if he doesn’t turn things around and he’s someone who will ‘take it on the chin’.
Whilst results and performances have picked up of late, there are many Celtic fans across the pond who feel his time has come to an end.
But it’s a different ball game today because Celtic will defend their Scottish Cup crown against Hearts, as Dublin shared his thoughts on those from Glasgow.
“If anyone knows Celtic, it’s Lenny,” said Dublin. “The pressure he will put on himself, first and foremost to make sure that they don’t continue on this horrendous run that they are on.
“The fans and what they demand. Having been there, I was only there for a very short period but I got a taste of how big that football club is and how important fans are to the club and vice versa.
“And Lenny will know that if he doesn’t turn things around then he will have to go. He’s the kind of man, who’ll take it on the chin.
On it being so hard for Celtic to maintain their success: “Maybe. But Steven Gerrard is doing a great job. So, you have to go ‘fair play. I have had my time. I have tried my hardest and what I have got it’s just not working out in the league this season’
“And Rangers have got so much better. It’s not just all down to the deterioration of Celtic.”
One thing is for sure, those in the Celtic boardroom have religiously backed the under-fire Lennon and it is a surprise that he is still donning the colours.
Win against Hearts in the final today then maybe, just maybe the mindset of certain players might just change.
But it does seem as though Lennon and Co. cannot wait for the January transfer window to open because they will be looking to part ways with those who don’t want to be here.
