Neil Lennon has told The Record that it’s in everybody’s best interest if the first Old Firm between Celtic and Rangers next season is delayed to allow for fans to attend.
Celtic will begin their 10-in-a-row charge on August 1 when the 2020-21 campaign kicks off in Scotland.
It’s a huge season for the Hoops but it’s equally as massive for Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, who absolutely must find a way to stop Lennon’s side from making history come next May.
Next season kicks off with behind-closed-doors fixtures due to the global health crisis.
But the Bhoys boss believes that it makes sense for the first Glasgow derby to be pushed back until Celtic and Rangers supporters are permitted to attend in person.
Lennon said: “Should the first Old Firm game be pushed back? I think that’s what everyone would want.
“Everyone associated with the game would want it and so would the clubs. I’m sure the TV companies would want it as well.”
Does it make sense? Absolutely.
An Old Firm game isn’t an Old Firm without the fans present and it’ll be a strange sight to see such bitter rivals clash in the absence of the roar.
It’s the supporters who whet the players’ appetites for such a big game and, the season that’s in it, it wouldn’t feel right.
