Celtic may have another right back signing in mind.
Celtic boss Neil Lennon has told the Evening Express that the club are down the line with ‘one or two’ other right backs aside from Hatem Abd Elhamed.
The Bhoys knew that they needed to bing in two right backs this summer, as they saw both Mikael Lustig and Cristian Gamboa leave the club in June.
Anthony Ralston is the only recognised right back at the club right now, and it’s clear that he isn’t ready to be first-choice at Parkhead.
Lennon has spent much of the summer seeking a new right back, and the problem was clear when giant defender Kristoffer Ajer was forced to play there in Champions League qualifiers against FK Sarajevo.
Celtic have now teed up a deal for Hapoel Be’er Sheva defender Hatem Abd Elhamed, who fits in well given that he can also play at centre back – another problem area for Celtic in recent times.
The 28-year-old Israeli has been undergoing a medical and should be secured soon, but it’s interesting that Lennon has now cancelled a trial for fellow right back Danny Simpson.
Lennon has explained that decision, claiming that not only were Celtic ‘down the line’ with Abd Elhamed, but also ‘one or two’ other options in that position.
“On Danny, we were down the line with Hatem and one or two other options so we just felt it would be futile to bring Danny in if he sees us bringing in other players in his specialised position,” he added.
It’s unclear just who Lennon is talking about, but Abd Elhamed may not be the only right back signing for Celtic soon, and a problem position may soon become a strength if Lennon gets his way.
