Lennon comments on phone call with Dermot Desmond, makes honest claim about Celtic’s displays

Celtic won an eighth straight league title on Saturday afternoon.

Celtic boss Neil Lennon has told The Express that he had a ‘good chat’ with owner Dermot Desmond on Saturday morning, just hours before winning the league title.

Celtic went to Aberdeen on Saturday, and knew that even a point would secure their eighth straight league title – and they produced a superb display.

Mikael Lustig opened the scoring in the first half, before Jozo Simunovic and Odsonne Edouard added second half goals to make it 3-0.

The Bhoys celebrated at Pittodrie, and interim boss Lennon will have been delighted to get over the line having been charged with the task of winning the title.

Lennon returned to Celtic in place of Brendan Rodgers back in February, and remains unbeaten since taking the reins, meaning Celtic are on course for a treble.

Lennon has subsequently put himself right in contention to land the Celtic job permanently, but that will be up to owner Dermot Desmond and chief executive Peter Lawwell.

Now, Lennon has admitted he had a ‘good chat’ with Desmond on Saturday, confirming the Irishman is ‘still very much involved’ at Celtic ahead of his big managerial decision this summer.

Lennon added that Celtic’s performances haven’t been great, but praised the mentality of his side having gone unbeaten under his stewardship.

“I’m grateful to Peter and Dermot for their words privately. We’ve done what we were expected to do. I can’t believe anyone doubted me!” said Lennon. “I had a good chat to Dermot on Saturday morning. He’s still very much involved and I’m sure he’ll be delighted. I inherited a totally new team and a style of play I had to get used to – not change, because it’s been successful.”

“Sometimes the performances haven’t been up to expectation levels, but in the main they’ve been pretty good. That’s eight wins and three draws. Our boys have been used to playing under pressure every week for years now. You can see the mentality of the team shining through,” he added.
