Celtic forward Timothy Weah has been struggling for football of late.
When Celtic signed Timothy Weah on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in January, there was a mixture of excitement and a little confusion.
Yes, the 19-year-old is a huge talent. He’s already a regular with the American national team, whilst he’s been in and around the PSG first team too.
Some felt that Celtic needed a more experienced option though, especially as Weah’s loan wasn’t even for a year or 18 months, or with a permanent clause – it was just for six months.
When Weah arrived, he told Celtic TV that the-Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers wanted to play him as a number nine, which left the teenager hugely excited.
However, Rodgers left for Leicester City in February, and Weah’s role has certainly changed under interim successor Neil Lennon, even just from a playing time perspective.
Weah has made just one start under Lennon, with an additional five substitute appearances. He scored in his only start, but he has mostly been played as a left winger since Lennon’s arrival, cutting in on his right foot.
Now, Lennon has told the Daily Record that he has been operating with just one striker in Odsonne Edouard, but finally has a second one with Leigh Griffiths’ return – seemingly overlooking Weah.
Weah may simply have slipped Lennon’s mind as a loanee, especially having used Oliver Burke there. However, Burke isn’t a natural striker either, and whilst Rodgers clearly saw Weah as a centre forward, it seems that Lennon doesn’t agree – potentially making a loan extension seem unlikely.
