Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths has told The Scottish Sun that he and his teammates will welcome back Dedryck Boyata to the squad.

Boyata did not play for Celtic against AEK Athens in the Champions League qualifiers in midweek.

The Hoops lost the match and have been knocked out of the Champions League qualifiers.

The Belgium international was not part of the Celtic squad that faced Partick Thistle in the Scottish League Cup on Saturday afternoon.

According to BBC Sport, Boyata claimed that he was injured for the match against Athens, but Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers said that the former Manchester City defender was fit to play.

Celtic striker Griffiths – who earns £18,000 per week as salary, according to The Daily Star – has said that he and his teammates will welcome Boyata back to the squad, with the 27-year-old having trained with the Under-20 side on Saturday, as reported by BBC Sport.

Leigh Griffiths of Celtic is seen during a training session at Lennoxtown on December 29, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Griffiths told The Scottish Sun: “We’ll welcome Dedryck back into the group next week. The manager and everyone above us will deal with the matter internally. As players, we just focus on the job in hand.

“There will be no resentment. Odsonne missed the game on Tuesday as well and there’s no resentment there.

“We need to move on and forget about it. We’ve got a massive game on Thursday and if Dedryck comes back in we’ll welcome him back.”

Positive

Boyata is one of the best players in the current Celtic squad, and the Glasgow giants could do with him in their Europa League playoff round.

Celtic’s defence has not looked great so far this season, and the return of the Belgium international is going to help Rodgers’s team.
