Glasgow Rangers chairman Dave King recently made some interesting comments about Celtic.

Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths has told BBC Sport that Rangers chairman Dave King’s recent claims about the Bhoys are “ludicrous”.

Rangers chairman King has told The Glasgow Evening Times that Celtic are not as far ahead of the Gers as they should be.

The Gers finished as many as 39 points behind the Hoops last season. While Brendan Rodgers’s side won the Scottish Premiership title without losing a single game, the Ibrox outfit could only end up third.

Celtic striker Griffiths has hit back at King’s comments abut the Bhoys.

“The gulf couldn’t be any bigger,” Griffiths told BBC Sport. “They’ll be trying to bridge the gap. But for him to come out and say we should be further ahead is ludicrous.”

“If you said to someone at the start of last season that Rangers would be 30-odd points behind Celtic at the end of the season, you’d be raging,” added the Scotland international striker.

“What was the gulf? 30-odd points. How does he expect that to be bigger? They were touting at the start of last season that they were going to win the league and this and that.

“Joey Barton was coming up and saying he was going to be the best player in Scotland – he lasted a few months.

“In the first [Old Firm] game, they got hammered 5-1 and they got hammered 5-1 at the end of the season. So, the gulf couldn’t be any bigger. This season, they’ll be trying to bridge the gap.”

Griffiths’s comments do make sense. Celtic simply could not be further ahead of Rangers than they already are. Moreover, their performances under Rodgers could not have been better.

The Hoops won the Scottish Premiership, the Scottish League Cup and the Scottish Cup last season. Celtic also progressed to the group stage of the Champions League.

Celtic could not have done any better last season than they did. It is now up to Rangers to bridge the gap on their Old Firm rivals.
