Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths is hoping to eventually strike up an attacking partnership with Odsonne Edouard, Football Scotland report.

Griffiths made his competitive first-team return last week against FK Sarajevo, coming off the bench for the Frenchman in a 2-1 win.

The 28-year-old missed the second half of last season after taking a hiatus from football to deal with off the pitch problems.

However, speaking to media this week, he appears ready to push on and compete for places in Neil Lennon’s side.

The Celtic boss has mostly utilised a lone striker as part of a 4-2-3-1 formation since taking over from Brendan Rodgers, but Griffiths is hoping for a tactical tweak that could see him play alongside Edouard as the season progresses.

As quoted by Football Scotland, the prolific forward said: “He’s (Edouard) playing out his skin and is doing so well.

“For a guy so young to play so many consecutive games has been brilliant.

“Hopefully as the season goes on we can strike up a partnership to play two up front.”

Lennon once utilised Anthony Stokes and Gary Hooper as a successful and consistent attacking duo during his first spell at the club, forming a partnership that on its day could set the tone for an entire Celtic performance.

During the 2011/12 season they scored a tremendous combined 50 goals in all competitions, also creating 25 assists. It was a contribution that helped Celtic win the first title of their current eight-in-a-row run.

It’d be very interesting to see whether this current Celtic side could function with two strikers in the side and in what form. Would it be a flexible 3-5-2 or even a 4-4-2?

Celtic’s current formation is very functional but under Lennon it has not quite allowed the side to find their swashbuckling groove.

Wins and big results have been achieved but the team have sometimes struggled to kill off matches, especially at home.

The Hoops have failed to beat any team by more than one goal at Celtic Park during Lennon’s second spell so far, with two dour 0-0 draws part of that run. Providing more attacking entertainment for the home fans could go down a treat.

Griffiths has scored 104 goals for the club and has the guile to effectively combine with, and assist, teammates too.

Edouard meanwhile managed to net 23 last term, with many of them coming at hugely important moments.

Against more defensive and compact teams, unleashing them together could provide the attacking spark that the Hoops need to really kick on under Lennon.
