Leigh Griffiths comments on frustrating time at Celtic

Griffiths was a key man for Celtic last season, but has been less of a talisman this term.

Celtic star Leigh Griffiths has told the club’s official website that the depth the Hoops boast in attacking areas is incredible, but admitted that it has been a frustrating time lately.

The 26-year-old had established himself as the talisman at Parkhead in recent seasons, but has found himself slightly closer to the periphery in recent times due to injury and the sensational form of Moussa Dembele.

Since returning from injury in September, Griffiths had started just one game in all competitions before Saturday’s clash with Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

However, he celebrated his return to the starting line-up for the clash with Caley with Celtic’s second goal as they went on to secure a 3-0 win and maintain their incredible start to the domestic season.

And following the game, he opened up about the frustration of having a smaller role to play over the last few weeks.

“My last goal here was against Kilmarnock and it has been frustrating not to be playing and not scoring, so I think I’ll take those goals all day long,” he told the club’s official website.

“At home games we always want to be on the front foot but it’s not just me and Moussa. The attacking options we have are nothing short of incredible. You heard it before that the gaffer left James Forrest out, Tom Rogic was on the bench and Stuart Armstrong, normally a No.10, went to right-back.”

In fairness to Brendan Rodgers, there was almost no way that he could justify leaving Dembele out of his starting line-up. The Frenchman has already scored 16 goals in all competitions this term, so had definitely earned the right to challenge Griffiths at the top of the pecking order.

But if Griffiths can continue to find the back of the net, then Rodgers will surely have no choice but to tweak his system slightly to enable both strikers to play a prominent role.
