Newcastle United have made first contact with the representatives of Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana ahead of a possible deal.

That’s according to new claims from French news outlet RMC Sport, who claim that Fofana is one of the first targets for Newcastle’s new owners.

Newcastle have allegedly contacted Fofana’s representatives with the Frenchman a top priority.

Newcastle’s new owners PIF are desperate to make an early January signing, and a ‘concrete offer’ for Fofana could come within weeks.

Praised as ‘absolutely colossal’ by Brendan Rodgers last season, Fofana looks like a star of the future at centre back.

Signed for a huge £36.5million, Fofana would surely cost even more now – and that’s not the only problem.

Newcastle target Fofana currently injured

Fofana suffered a major injury against Villarreal in August. The 20-year-old suffered a fractured fibula and medial knee ligament damage after a horror challenge.

The defender won’t play again this year, but is expected to return in 2022. Coming back from that injury won’t be easy, and he would surely be rusty for a while after his comeback.

Newcastle seemingly aren’t deterred though, and are still ready to pay big money to sign Fofana if possible.

This would be a major coup to start the Newcastle project, with Fofana already shining in the Premier League.

Leicester surely won’t want to sell such an impressive young talent, but Newcastle will have huge spending power – and raiding Premier League rivals could become a regularity for them.
