Newcastle United should have rivalled Leicester City in the race to sign Vicente Iborra.

According to the Independent, Leicester City are on the verge of completing a deal for Sevilla’s Vicente Iborra – and Newcastle United may be left to reflect on an opportunity missed.

Iborra has cost Leicester just £12 million, and that makes the Spaniard look like a very good value addition.

With Newcastle looking to sign a central-midfielder, Iborra could have been a perfect signing for Rafael Benitez’s side.

Sevilla's Vicente Iborra

Iborra has a wonderful amount of technical ability, and he also offers a great amount of defensive strength.

The 29-year-old played an important role for Sevilla last season, and has a happy knack of finding the net regularly from his midfield base.

Iborra could have offered Newcastle solidity and creativity in their midfield ranks, which will be crucial as Benitez’s side look to impose themselves at Premier League level again.

Newcastle have searched around for a number of midfield targets, but are yet to find their answer.

And they may look on with regret that they didn’t rival Leicester for Iborra, if the powerful midfielder shows his best form at the King Power Stadium.
